No More Metal Look- London Dentists offer Invisalign Treatment

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

istock_000002300390xsmall.jpgI recalled my buddy saying that it’s never too late for anyone to look best!I am 15-year-old lad that had problems of crooked teeth, spaces between the teeth and teeth that stick out. My jaw function also was not proper and there was excessive wearing of teeth. Needless to say they hamper my confidence and I am always isolated. We stay in suburbs of Glasgow and my parents took me to a dentist there who offered me a metal brace. He reassured me and my parents of appropriately-shaped teeth 1 year later. But this did not help solve my confidence problem. My peers started teasing me even worse. They constantly made fun of me calling me METAL MOUTH.

My parents pooled up money and took me to a London dentist that offered tooth colored brackets. The dental experts there concentrated not only on straightening the teeth but also on achieving the harmony for my teeth, jaws as well as face.

They offered us three latest techniques to choose in orthodontics; the tooth-colored brackets, the Invisalign and the treatment with invisible lingual appliances.

We chose to go with Invisalign, which simply mean invisible alignment. Per the experts there, it is a new and revolutionary way to straighten crooked teeth without using any wires. This method uses a series of aligners that are transparent, clear and plastic and fit on to the teeth precisely as a mouth guard. The best part is that they are almost invisible. They can be easily doffed for flossing and brushing. The doctors also told the speech during initial days could be slurred but will become alright soon. They told that I need these for 10 months time.

Truly, the first week was horrible with bad speech but now I have gotten 6 months with them and feel great. I now thank Invisalign that make me smile like you all do. The smile and self esteem are worth the cost say my parents.

A Page From The Diary Of A London Dentist

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

istock_000002178390small.jpgKaitlin came complaining to me, “Hello Doctor! I am surprised to see cavities in teeth of my 3 year old kid.”I know that children’s dental health is one area that most families and parents today need to focus on. These days I am treating more and more younger patients having cavities in their primary teeth. So I gazed the young lady’s anxiety.

First off, I appreciated her for being a parent that she is. I know of many parents that ignore the same problem assuming that it is only to the baby teeth and that they eventually will fall out resulting in better teeth. However, they are not aware of the fact that it is far from truth. Dental experts like me would know that cavities at such age would result in several complications including loss of tooth/teeth at early age, development of crooked teeth, speech and hearing problems, and most of all poor confidence and self-image. In fact a child as young as 1 year old should make its first visit to dentist and brushing should start from 2 years of age and supervised till 6 years when the child is learned to do it on its own. I explained to the anxious mother about several factors that are contributing to this increased problem, such as an upsurge in the sugary snacks and increased use of water that is non-fluoridated. I also told her that today’s children spend little time than required for brushing.

As a dental care specialist I tried to convince her of the fact that it’s not an easy feat to imparting dental hygiene to kids of that small age but one can always try by all means to take this challenge. I gave Kaitlin some handy tips and asked her to follow them diligently and reassured her that her child will not be one to visit me frequently.

Floss regularly right from age the kid started to show eruption of first two teeth.

Emphasized on the importance of flossing the molars, as they lay closely spaced to one another than the incisors or canines.

Parents’ supervision and assistance while brushing is essential until the kid attains age of 6. Here, parents should educate their kids of right technique of brushing teeth.

Change brush once every 3 months. Additionally, change the brush if the child suffered a throat infection.

To make brushing a fun event go for kid-friendly paste flavors and give a brush that is adorned with their favorite toon characters.

Last, every parent to stand as example than mere educator. Brush two times daily. Gargle after every snacking.

Kaitlin left my room convinced.

Headaches At Young Age Reflect Dental Problems Says A London Dentist

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

istock_000001639106xsmall.jpgState University of New York conducted a study on this subject. The researchers at Buffalo sampled about 50 children that complained of regular headaches and studied its effect on dental ailments. The sampled children were in the age group of 8 through 16. This group was compared to a control group that did not complain of any regular headache. The scientists then took the plaster models of teeth of all those children belonging to both the control and the other group. To their surprise the researchers noted the bite of children that complained of regular headaches was not proper and indeed was an overbite, wherein the upper jaw teeth overlap or cover the teeth of lower jaw when one bites down. Additionally, this group of children seems to show a posterior cross bite as well wherein the top as well as bottom posterior back teeth do not sit properly on one another when one bites down.

As also children with the overbite or posterior crossbite problems are three times more prone to suffer from regular headaches and a child having overbite as well as posterior crossbite will be nine times more likely to complain of regular headaches. However, the study involved children with no complaints of jaw problems, which are otherwise called as TMJ or temporomandibular joint problems that are commonly associated with headaches. The study team; however, excluded children with TMJ problems.

“The study is inconclusive as to whether bite disorders are contributing to headache; however, it will certainly throw a light for further research and study in this area and it could prove a boon to those children if their headache complaint could be resolved by a simple dental intervention,” remarks a dental expert in London.

London Dentists Implant Solution Perfect For Missing Teeth

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

istock_000001796056small.jpgA husband came in along with his wife who had 2 missing incisors on the upper jaw and 1 incisor and a canine missing on the lower jaw to the right side of her face. She lost teeth in an accident. She was no doubt not smiling her normal self.We told them that a missing tooth or teeth would cause remaining teeth to rotate, shift and make them crooked. The gaps in the teeth impart speech impairment as well as a sense of embarrassment and needless to say poor self-esteem and confidence. We also told that missing teeth could result in improper and proper chewing of food becomes a problem. To address this we offered dental implants procedure.

A dental implant is usually a metal screw that is designed to thread well into the jawbone thus enabling for attachment of dental prosthetics. These are made of medical-grade titanium or of titanium alloy most of the time because of its great biocompatibility.

The implant consists of titanium screw as well as crown. First off a hole is drilled at edentulous site, the titanium screw is then guided to hold implant in place. Following this, the protective cover screw is fit on top so it enables the site to heal well as well as the implant to anchor well. After some time (many months), the cover is removed and an interim crown is fit on top of the dental implant so it will serve as a bed for the gum to grow and shape in. The implantation is said to be complete when this crown is replaced by a permanent one.

Convinced of this restorative functionality of teeth, the couple gave a nod to dental implants procedure. Want more reasons? The success rate of dental implants in general is about 95% and more for lower jaw relative to the upper jaw teeth.

Pulp Cap Treatment- Visit London Dentists

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

istock_000002986202small.jpgistock_000002986202small.jpgI can recall the feelings of my patients at the utterance of the root canal. They would be just horrified and I guess if they were given a choice of run or stay, they would be running away without any exception. However, if the dentists are more competent, half of the root canal treatments can be avoided and instead a pulp capping would suffice.

Whether or not tooth decay warrants a root canal is sometimes puzzling to even a competent dentist; however, if the dentist can carefully drill and see through the depth of the decay, he would find the nerve alive and in that case he opts out of RCT. If it’s dead a root canal is warranted though. A filling or pulp cap is enough to fix the problem when the nerve is intact.

Pulp cap is a dental procedure wherein the dentist drills and goes to nerve level when removing decay. The exposed nerve, which can be regarded as pulp, would then be capped or covered after the decay has been removed and cleaned from the cavity. The procedure is regarded as a conservative treatment and the cavity would be filled with bonded composite technique and there is no calcium hydroxide layer unlike in the earlier days. The success rate of this procedure is high as well as the treatment also lasts for long time period. If the patient is rightly picked for the procedure, it’s almost successful.

By pulp capping your dentist is trying to keep the decayed tooth alive besides avoiding a need for the much-painful ouchie root-canal treatment. Pulp capping has been an old procedure, however, newer techniques and materials are evolving to make a person more comfortable.

London Catches Up With Dental Tourism

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

fotolia_1338916.jpg“London dentiques geared up to offer the hitchhikers a confident smile or fix dental implants or lay the porcelain veneers without having them to wait for long,” remarks an expert who’s busy giving appointments to those who are enticing dental tourism.

Gone are those days where people wanted to tour at leisure. Now they mix pleasure and purpose while on tour. In this context medical tourism picked up a lot in the recent years and people are enjoying the benefits of health as they tour during a vacation.

Dentistry can be suited as well with tourism. One great advantage of blending a leisure trip with dentistry is that as of today, dental procedures take very little time per day and within a time interval of 2 weeks a treatment can be full. This is the time that usually a person plans for a great holidaying.

It was during earlier days that medical tourism was attractive in the South East Asian countries. With competition growing stiffer and stiffer, the treatment costs have been evened out in Europe as well and London has been more attractive in the recent with respect to the dental tourism.

Travelling to London for dental care seems to offer worthwhile option because of the hoard of places it boasts in and around London as well as offering one a big list of dental experts offering wide range of cost-effective dental care procedures.

There are several low airfare airlines to London and one can always take advantage of the same. With great places to see around, London can be regarded a great choice for European hitchhikers with any dental problems and mix dental treatments with a great smiling holidays thereafter.

Teeth Bleaching Mania Syndrome catching up in London

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

smile1thumbnail1.jpgWell who would not want dazzling, pearly shiny white teeth? Everyone out there right? The quest for whiter and still whiter enamel resulted in a bunch of people touted as “bleachorexics,” who are so damn addicted to bleaches and the likes. This teeth bleaching mania syndrome is giving rippers a great opportunity. They are cashing in on this craze with rip off products. Its not that people are losing just money, the dentists in London remark that these fake whiteners offer more danger than one can imagine.

Teeth whitening can be taken at recommended intervals of say once or twice a year. However, the craze is taking people too far and unfortunately there are people that use the teeth whitening products from over the counter as often as daily basis. The craze is especially catching up with younger generation.

Unfortunately, they arent realizing the fact that they are damaging their teeth as well as gums while resorting to such fads. They are ending up in what is called translucent blues rather than pearly whites, because the tooth enamel is destropyed by the hydrogen carbamide and the hydrogen peroxide present in the tooth whiteners. Aside, the gum problems that crop up include bleeding and purpling. Can these make you smile?

Having said so, we ask you not to be too skeptic as well. The dentists in London proclaim that teeth whitening can bring in magical results and is also effective and safe provided it is done in conformance to the manufacturer’s instructions given on the product. There are products that are accredited by dental authorities and one may go in choosing the same. Last, a word of caution. Overdoing of teeth for color is like abusing them, it results in only repurcussive effects.

London Doctors Offers Painless Resolution For Toothaches

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

istock_000001232902xsmall.jpgJanet Boxer, a 14-year-old was quite upset with the way she was tricked into anesthesia during her childhood for dental extractions. “The experience indeed deteriorated my dental future,” says Janet.

There are other miseries that I could share with all my buddies, like the demise of my grandma, that I could share with everyone - the cattle in my backyard, the hens and ducks in the coop, my stinking ferret, with my favorite pet turkey, and also family and friends. However, the miseries that remained after going to a dentist and belonged to me alone,” says Janet.

“I guess a visit to the dentist seemed to be end of my infancy and I was introduced to the world of contradictions where people speak one and practice one,” the dentist is one who did that always.

“One night, after mom bag piping us to slumber, I woke up with a painful tooth. Mom came and said she will tan my back. I remember crying and falling asleep.

The following morning has been even worse with my sis and brother teasing me and adding salt to the insult.

Salt! I remember grandma asking me to keep a pinch of it on the gums that is causing ache and I did so and felt relieved for sometime as well.

Sometime later I remember I was dragged to dentist, where I created a hell there for RNs.

One elderly nurse came and gave a beautiful pink towel and asked me to smell, I did and can’t remember what they all have done. I know they cheated me as a fool and went back home without even thanking anyone there.”

Janet continues, “As I went back I noticed one thing. There in no more pain and I could eat what I was doing without any ‘ouch’ or ‘ahs’. I thanked my doctor and the sweet nurse that made me smell pink towel containing sedative.”

Can Hypodontia and Ovarian Cancer Be Correlated?

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

“People of London put up a brave smile even when terror struck. However, a worry found in many of them is to having to smile with one or more missing teeth. This needs correction,” remarks a renowned dentist in London.

So, which are the most commonly missing teeth or smaller in shape than usual? It is either the wisdom teeth or the lower second premolar. It can also be either missing or peg shaped upper lateral incisors too.

The February issue of American Journal Dental Association suggests that there is a correlation between hypodontia of the permanent teeth and malignancy of ovaries. Scientists at University of Lexington compared 50 women with ovarian cancer to 100 women without the disease. The data revealed that 20 out of 100 ovarian cancer patients suffered from hypodontia. In a healthy women case, it is only 3 out of 100 women who had the condition of hypodontia.

This study is especially helpful because ovarian cancer is difficult to be detected at early stages and hypodontia can be used as indicator or marker for identifying the risk of ovarian cancer. It is well known that when a malignancy is detected earlier, the treatment options are broad and one can get rid of it soon.

Having said so, the study results send warning bells to people not to neglect of dental problems even if they are minute and do not interfere with day-to-day living such as hypodontia. A regular visit to a dentist can make one aware of their dental health and it is essential.
