London dentist offers teeth jewellery

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

The new fashion craze this year could be jewellery for the teeth. You can now have a brilliant piece of jewellery set into your tooth enamel with minimal drilling. Teeth jewellery is catching on and some brides-to-be are showing interest in this cosmetic procedure.
Other dental procedures that are catching on are teeth whitening, polishing and breath management. State-of-the-art teeth spas are opening in London, and some  brides-to-be are having this procedure performed. They usually visit the London dentist prior to their wedding date to have their teeth whitened and polished. Now, they are also including breath management. Other dentists say that jewellery for the teeth is strictly a cosmetic dental procedure with no dental benefits. No known side effects currently exist, but allergy to teeth should be considered. While other dentists say there is no harm in having jewellery dental procedures performed.
Oral health care is vey important, and more effort should be spent in addressing oral health care from childhood. Opponents do not feel that children should be taken to such dental spas offering these types of cosmetics, and cosmetic in children should be limited to aligning crooked teeth.

Oral Hygiene Tips by a london dentist

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

There are numerous countries where people do not practice oral hygiene, and where oral health is not sought. This is mostly due to no dental education. Dental caries and gingivitis are very common problems, even in countries where dentists can be readily found. Dental problems affect both the indigent and the wealthy. Although, not lethal, these diseases cost a lot of money and lost work for some people. Dental problems are caused by oral bacteria and dental plaque formation, which require daily removal. Practicing good oral hygiene from a very early age is very important.
We cannot overstress the importance of good oral hygiene at home. Teeth have 5 surfaces, and all of these surfaces must be cleaned regularly. When brushing your teeth, place the brush at a 45 degree angle to your teeth, touching the gum line. Use a soft bristle brush if available. Use a giggly vibrating motion and brush back and forth. Then use the same action for the inner sides of your teeth, and point the brush parallel to your front teeth and use the same 45 degree angle. Then shrub the biting surfaces of your teeth. Use only a small amount of toothpaste, so that the bristles actually touch your teeth. Use dental floss to reach between your teeth in a back and forth motion. Your dentist or dental hygienist will teach you how to brush and floss properly. By performing good oral hygiene, your teeth will last you a long time!

Crooked teeth straigtened in london

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

There are a variety of dental procedures that can be used to straighten crooked teeth. The more recent methods can fall within the scope of cosmetic dentistry. A more common method is Invisalign®. Invisalign® teeth straightening consist of a series of sequential clear plastic trays specifically designed for each individual’s teeth and smile. After visiting your London cosmetic dentist or orthodontist, impressions are taken of your mouth, and models are poured in the usual manner. Computerized design and mapping methods are then used to produce a series of trays for the patient. These aligners must be used as prescribed by your London dentist, who will place the first tray. The tray will seem like it does not fit. Be patient, they are designed to fit exactly into the teeth when the teeth are in their next position. The trays will be worn day and night for 2 weeks, only removing them to brush and floss, and to eat. Then the teeth will be allowed to rest, and then the next tray will be placed. The whole procedure takes about a year to complete. Invisalign® cannot be used on partially erupted teeth.

Oral Cancer and Lupeol and Certain Fruits

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Investigators from Hong Kong University published a study in the ‘Journal of Cancer Research’ on the effects of blackberries, papaya, and blueberries, and their effects on possibly reducing the danger of oral cancer development. Lupeol, a triterpene compound, found in these fruits have been shown to inhibit NFkB, a protein that helps with growth of cells. In this study, lupeol was shown to suppress the spread of cancer and reduce tumour size 3 times more rapidly than a platinum-based chemotherapy drug (known as cisplatin). Lupeol also did not cause the weight loss normally seen with chemotherapy. Dr. Carter, Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said that it is already known that a diet containing five or more servings of fruits and vegetables may reduce oral cancer risk; however the fact that certain fruits can fight oral cancer in patients that already have it is great news. More research is required on lupeol’s ability to fight oral cancer more effectively than the drugs currently being used. In the U.K., one person dies of oral cancer every 5 hours, and in the U.S. the rate is one person every hour. That is over 8,000 deaths a year from oral cancer.

Dental Sedation in london: What Level Will You Need?

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Many people would rather live with a toothache than visit their dentist. of course, these people usually do not go to the dentist for regular check-ups. There is help! The London dentist now offers new and improved techniques for anxiety and fear, which can allow even the most nervous patient the ability to have their dental problems addressed. Many dentists have been studying dental sedation, and taking courses on how to perform dental sedation. There are different levels of dental sedation, depending on the fear level of the patient(s).
Minimal dental sedation is performed when a patient wants to relax during a dental procedure, and can be performed using hypnosis and/or mild medications. Moderate dental sedation, also referred to as conscious sedation, is a greater sedation allowing the patient to stay awake, although be quite drowsy, while the dental procedure is being performed. Patients may only partially remember the dental experience at this level of sedation. Deep dental sedation is used when patients are very nervous. The patients are still conscious, but usually do not remember the dental procedure. General anaesthesia is used when patients are very frightened of the dentist and the dental procedures. The patient will have no recollection of the dental procedure. Several methods used to sedate dental patients are, inhalation sedation using nitrous oxide, and short acting tranquilizers and/or Halcion taken orally. Also, patients can receive their medication(s) intravenously for a more moderate dental sedation. General anaesthesia is best performed in a hospital environment.

London dentists talks about Protecting your teeth and Gums

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Many individuals have gum disease and don’t even know that they have it. You may be one of them! Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums without loss of the bone that supports your teeth. Whereas, periodontitis is an inflammation of the bone and/or gums that support your teeth with an associated loss of the supporting bone. In other words, once bone is lost, it is referred to as periodontitis. Periodontitis is caused by certain oral bacteria contained within dental plaque. You can brush and floss to remove this plaque, however it is difficult to remove all of the plaque. This remaining plaque may harden to form calculus and tartar, and this may extend below the gumline. Periodontitis is preventable, with proper and daily brushing and flossing.

Besides bacteria, there are other factors that can increase your risk of developing periodontitis. Several of these factors are: diabetes, smoking, medications (i.e., anti-epileptic drugs, steroids, cancer drugs, oral contraceptives, and calcium channel blockers). Also, defective dental restorations and pregnancy can also be considered factors.

Gingivitis and periodontitis have also been linked to an increased risk of several systemic diseases. The mechanism of action is that bacteria, and their by-products and end-products, enter the blood stream and contribute to various coronary and heart diseases.

So, make sure that you brush and floss at least twice daily, brush your tongue, replace your toothbrush every 6 months, eat a balanced diet, and contact your dentist immediately if you feel that you have any symptoms of gum disease. Gingivitis and periodontitis may not be discovered by the patient until it is too late, so make sure you have regular dental check-ups!

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Why is a tooth extraction performed? An extraction is performed when a tooth is broken down, or severely decayed and/or damaged. When visiting a London dentist, they may attempt to try to save the tooth by performing fillings, or root canal treatment and a crown. However, if it is decided by you and your dentist that the tooth cannot be saved, then a tooth extraction will be performed. It is the process of removing the tooth from its surrounding bony structure.
There are several other reasons why a tooth may require extraction. These include the following: 1) the eruption of a tooth may be hindered by another tooth as in the case of wisdom teeth and other impacted teeth; 2) if orthodontic treatment is required and there is not enough space in your mouth; 3) if you are undergoing head and neck radiation your teeth may be destroyed by the X-rays and lack of saliva in your mouth; 4) if you are undergoing chemotherapy for cancer tooth infections may occur, as these drugs weaken the overall immune system; and 5) if you have undergone or plan to undergo an organ transplant, as you have be much more prone to infections because you are taking immune system suppressing drugs.

Mouth Rinses: City of London Dental Clinic

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Your City of London dentist talks about the advantages and disadvantages of available mouth rinses. Often used to mask bad breath and tastes, prevent plaque accumulation, and help protect against dental decay, some mouth rinses can also be harmful. Most mouth washes don’t wash well. Mouth rinses are divided into therapeutic, cosmetic, or both. Cosmetic mouth rinses are found over-the-counter (OTC) and are helpful for removing food debris, masking bad breath, and reducing bacteria in the mouth. Fifteen OTC mouth rinses have been investigated, and have been shown to work for 10 minutes, with none working after 2 hours. Therapeutic mouth rinses also have the above benefits; however contain additional ingredients that can be protective against several oral diseases. In contrast to cosmetic mouth rinses, therapeutic mouth rinses are controlled by a government body. These mouth rinses are classified into either: 1) anti-plaque or anti-gingivitis mouth rinses; and 2) fluoride mouth rinses that fight cavities.
Your City of London dentist suggests that the use of mouth rinses is up to you, and what your needs are at the time. Although mouth rinses can curb bad breath for 2-3 hours, they are of limited benefit in the prevention of dental decay and gum disease(s). They can mask bad breath, however bad breath can be to sign of something bad occurring in your mouth. You should always brush your teeth, use a fluoride toothpaste, floss, and visit your City of London dentist regularly!
