Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Even though you may need dental crowns after a root canal, you may not realize that there are other times when you may also need to have them. For example, if you get a partial denture, you may need crowns installed on teeth that are used to anchor the bridge. Today, your London dentist can give you plenty of information about crowns that will be most suitable for different areas of your mouth.

Consider situation where you had a root canal on a molar. While you were fortunate enough to be able to have this tooth saved, it will still need some kind of permanent cove. In most cases, the material used for a molar crown will be different from what would be used for a front tooth. In particular, you may want a metal crown that has a porcelain coat. Since the molars take on an enormous amount of biting pressure, you may not want to have a resin crown installed in this area.

As you discuss various options with your dentist, you will want to consider cosmetic issues as well as durability and functionality. Without a question, a gold or silver crown on visible teeth will not be appealing, let alone flatter your smile. Typically, when you need dental crowns, you can have get a temporary one until you decide which material is most suitable for you. For example, if you have a root canal, your dentist will usually install a temporary crown in order to allow enough time for the gums to heal. That said, once there are no further risks of infection, you will need to make some decisions about which type of permanent crown material you want used to cover the tooth.

London Dental Clinic Offering Lumineers

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Your London dental clinic now offers ultra-thin veneers that require very minimal preparation called “Lumineers.” They are used to brighten and reshape your smile, by covering discoloured and worn down teeth, and can even be used to close gaps between teeth. Lumineers are fabricated from very thin and strong porcelain that is dramatically thinner than regular porcelain that is patented by Cerinate. Very thin, like contact lens, they require very minimal or no tooth preparation prior to placement. As a result, this is considered a reversible procedure, as they can be removed in the future and your intact teeth are still there. They just require smoothing. Lumineers are an excellent choice for discoloured, chipped, and slightly damaged and malposed teeth. They can also be placed over existing crowns or bridges.
Only dentists certified and registered with Cerinate can have these Lumineers fabricated for you. There is only a certain dental laboratory that makes these, so they are not offered everywhere. These can be finished for you in two dental visits, and have displayed a great success rate. So, visit your London dental clinic for an appointment, and change your smile!

Dental Crowns Made in London

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

Dental crowns are required for your teeth when your teeth are broken down to the point where a filling or onlay will not suffice. Also called “dental caps,” they cover the entire exposed surface of your tooth. The main reasons that crowns are recommended by your London dentist are that your tooth has excessive decay or has had a root canal, making it more brittle. Crowns can also be made for your teeth for aesthetic reasons, but there are other procedures for aesthetics and crowns are usually the last resort. When placed on your tooth, the dental crown will be the new outer covering of your tooth, and can be fabricated from gold, porcelain fused to gold, or all porcelain. Your London dentist will discuss all types of crowns with you and what types of procedures are involved before beginning the crown process.Your London dentist will use local anaesthesia to properly numb your mouth when performing this procedure, After the decay is removed from the tooth, the outer layer (i.e., enamel) and some of the secondary layer (i.e., dentin) is removed using specially designed dental drills or burs. After your dentist is happy with the preparation, impressions of the tooth and the surrounding teeth are taking with dental putty of other material. Then an opposing impression and a bite registration are taken. A shade is then selected that matches the surrounding teeth. The impressions are given to the dental laboratory, along with the bite registration and instructions. The laboratory then makes your crown. This may take a week or two, so a temporary crown is placed and cemented with temporary cement. When the crown is returned from the laboratory, the dentist places your crown on your tooth, makes the necessary adjustments, and then finally cements the crown onto your tooth.

CEREC Technology at the London Dental Clinic

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

When you go visit your London dental clinic, you may need one or several restorations to repair your teeth that have excessive decay and/or root canals. So, how much time are you going to miss from work, how long is this going to take, and how much is it going to cost (i.e., in both time away from work and the price of the dental procedure(s)) Your mind is calculating and then you meet your London dentist, who tells you that this entire process will take only an hour and a single visit. You think to yourself; how can this be? All of you other onlays or crowns took several visits. Your London dentist explains that their dental clinic now has CEREC technology which will allow the dentist to prepare your tooth, take a digital picture of the preparation which gets changed into a 3-D computerised model, and then have the on-site dental laboratory fabricate the restoration. The entire procedure only takes about an hour. Once your dentist and the laboratory are pleased with the computer designed tooth/teeth, a very high quality ceramic block will be milled on-site and then shaded and coloured to match your tooth or teeth. The ceramic blocks are available in many tooth shades, and your dentist can perform a very good match. Once the restoration is tried in the mouth and fitted properly, it is touched up and polished, and then cemented in place. Your dentist also has more control of the final restoration, as it is made in the dental office instead of having to be sent to an outside laboratory.
