Dental Flossing for a Healthy London Smile

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Dental floss is a man-made fibre, usually nylon and comes on a spool. It is inexpensive, ready to use and always available in the market. Dental floss is used in cleaning the crevices between the teeth and below the gum line where bristles of ordinary toothbrush can’t reach. It mechanically removes the bacteria that build up on our teeth and gums. Brushing alone cannot remove these bacteria. If the bacteria are not removed, they turn into plaque. Afterwards, the plaque will then turn into a hard substance that is commonly known as tartar. This will lead to the growth of more dangerous types of bacteria that produce toxins which is harmful to our bodies. The toxins will irritate the gums and can lead to gingivitis or inflammation. It will then result to Periodontal Disease wherein the toxins harm the gums and the bones that support the teeth and lead to tooth loss.
Dental flossing can also eliminate bad breath. It prevents the bacteria from breaking down food particles left in the mouth and turning it into volatile sulphur compounds that cause bad breath.
When flossing, use about 18 inches of floss. Wind some of it around one of your middle finger and the rest around the other middle finger. Use the thumb and forefinger of each hand in grasping the floss and leave an inch of floss between the two hands. Insert the floss in-between teeth. When the floss reaches the gum flap, gently slide it into the space between the tooth and the gum. Scrape up and down along the side of the tooth. Repeat five to six times. Do the same on the adjacent tooth. Repeat the procedure on the rest of the teeth. Turn each middle finger to use a fresh section of the floss. Don’t forget to gargle with water after flossing.
Dental flossing is easy… Try to make it a habit for an odour free healthy smile!

Have a healthy mouth by cleaning the spaces between your teeth and visiting my dental clinic here in London as often as you can

Everyone wants to have a radiant smile and healthy teeth. A lot of people pay attention to the beauty of teeth from the outside. The truth is that you also have to take care of the little spaces between your teeth in order to have a completely healthy mouth. It is impossible to have a radiant smile and a healthy mouth if you do not clean the spaces between your teeth.

I’ve been practicing dentistry for years already and I always tell my patients that you have to take care of the spaces between your teeth. There are a lot of ways to take care of the spaces between your teeth. In my dental clinic here in London, I offer total cleaning of the teeth or what is also known as prophylaxis. I recommend that you have total teeth cleaning once a year or more.

Aside from visiting your dentist, you also have to do your own interdental cleaning at home. Keep those spaces between your teeth as clean as possible by using dental floss. After you brush your teeth, you can reach the spaces between your teeth through dental floss. Try to brush and floss your teeth twice a day.

Flossing has evolved. There are several types of floss for your teeth nowadays. You can use super floss which is a foamy and spongy type of floss. This floss cleans spaces between your teeth much better because of its spongy nature. Dental tape is a type of floss that is wider than the usual floss. Since the area of flossing is bigger, dental tape can cover larger surface areas between your teeth. The last type of floss involved floss holders. With floss holders, the floss is usually stronger than the average floss and the holder makes it easier for you to navigate through the spaces between your teeth.

If you aren’t flossing regularly then consider getting floss as soon as possible. Prevent the onset of any kind of tooth decay or gum disease by cleaning the spaces between your teeth. I never fail to reiterate to my patients to brush and floss twice or more daily.

Top dental tips and tricks for dental patients in London

1. Almost all painful dental techniques can be controlled with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). A few examples’s like aspirin and ibuprofen can work really well to calm you down and soothe any dental pain. You can also use these NSAIDs before you start any painful dental treatment as it dampens the body’s pain response to dental procedures. Continue the tablets after the procedure too.
2. Cosmetic dentistry is useful to correct gummy smiles as well. All you have to do is get an evaluation with a periodontist who is a gum specialist and combine his expertise with a cosmetic dentist and you can have a good smile with expert help.
3. Flossing is really important and you should do it atleast once a week if not everyday. There are a large variety of flossing threads on London supermarket stores shelves but choose something like fine, waxed thread if you are comfortable with flossing. If you are a beginner and don’t really want to hurt yourself then you can use the newer dental tapes which are fluoride impregnated and much easier to handle. Flavoring of the thread doesn’t really matter as long as is sugarless and the best variety I usually recommend is Teflon-coated Glide which is available as both tape and thread forms.
