Gum disease, which is also called gingivitis, is a condition that affects the gums and can result in painful, swollen gums that hurt on contact. More severe cases could develop into what’s known as periodontitis, which affects both the tissue that connects your tooth to its socket, and the bone in your jaw.

Caused by a build-up plaque on the teeth, which can result from not brushing or flossing often enough, gum disease can be a serious problem for many people. If it develops into periodontitis, it can even result in the loss of a tooth.

You can start to protect yourself from gum disease now, by maintaining good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss a few times a week, use mouthwash where possible, and see your dentist regularly.

However, if your gum disease is more advanced, your dentist may want to provide treatment. This might be a scale and polish, to clear tartar and plaque from your teeth using special instruments, or could involve root planning, where your dentist will clear bacteria from the roots of your teeth. Antibiotics are also a common course of treatment for cases of gum disease.

Severe gum disease, including periodontitis, could require surgery to remove an infected tooth and stop the problem worsening. This is why it’s a good idea to have your dentist take a look at your gums as soon as you spot anything amiss – early gum disease is easy to treat, and even easier to prevent.

If your gums are sore, swollen or red, or if they bleed when you brush, see your London dentist as soon as possible about gum disease treatment.

Fighting Disease in the Mouth in the City of London

One of the major problems with the mouth is that things can go wrong quickly and get out of control before you know it in the city of London, so you have to be on your guard everyday in order to give yourself a chance of avoiding the horrors that can crop up. This means you have to be on top form with your oral hygiene at least twice a day with your brushing, flossing and rinsing. You must also ensure to maintain regular visits to your dentist because if things do start to go wrong, they can be halted in their tracks before they get to the next level. In the early stages, a dentist can clean your teeth of tartar and if need be, administer a filling. However, if plaque and tartar are allowed to develop, they will each away at the gums and your teeth’s enamel causing gum disease and bad tooth decay. At this stage, the fight becomes more complex for you and your dentist, which may involve complex procedures such as root canal treatment and deep scaling and polishing. At home the way you look after your teeth will need to change as well and your products will require the use of herbal products as well to stop the conditions worsening. If you go beyond this, then you are in the last chance saloon which could involve bone and tissue grafting. It’s a horrible spiral to get yourself into, so you would be advised to get your preventative dentistry right from the beginning.

Keeping a Good Mouth and Body in London

The body is a well oiled machine and when everything is working in delicious harmony you are going to have a healthy life-style in London. However, deflate one of the equations in this machine of yours, for whatever the reason and the rest of your working parts have to work harder to maintain the balance. One of the most important elements of your body is your mouth, for if it falls into decay, it can have devastating effects on some of the body’s most vital organs. It can all start innocuously with a build up of plaque and if unchecked, it becomes tartar that can start to attack the gums and your teeth. Allowed to continue and you will start to develop gum and periodontal disease. Now any type of disease means that something in your body is being infected and when it comes to your teeth and gums, it means poison is being leaked into your blood. Over a long period of time, this means that the infected blood is being fed around your body will start to breakdown your heart, your kidneys and your liver and in the end, they will simply cease to fight the cause. Any sign of things getting out of hand in your mouth should be fought immediately and although it is an old adage, if you are looking beautiful with stunning teeth, you will feel a million dollars, as well as feeling healthy- it’s an important part of the machine.

Every time you light up a cigarette in London, you are putting quite a strain on your mouth, teeth and gums. The nicotine and chemicals in a fag attack the natural saliva in your mouth and over a prolonged period of time, this will cause the mouth to dry up. Apart from the staining from nicotine, the lack of saliva will put your mouth at danger to periodontal disease, cavities and inevitably gum disease- which is a killer in itself as it can have detrimental effects on the heart. Overcoming the problem isn’t easy either and may require intricate techniques down at the dentists, let alone the fact that you are going to have to be more attentive to the way you look after teeth and gums. Dentists are very aware of such issues and some will also give you advice on how to quit smoking altogether. Once you have a habit, it isn’t that simple to just drop, but it is important that you are completely aware of the dangers that come with smoking and the damage it can cause to your gums; no-one is telling you how to live your life, far from it, but you can at least try to cut down and learn to look after your oral hygiene. Your dentist will be there to give you all the advice you need so don’t be afraid to ask.

Many people are aware of flossing but either don’t get around to it or think it is unnecessary to carry it out. In fact flossing is a vital weapon in the fight against plaque in the mouth and the failure to floss can have, in the long term, consequences as serious as tooth loss through advanced dental decay.

Dental floss is easily available in super markets and pharmacies and is affordable too. It comes in handy, small boxes which means that it can easily be carried around and taken on trips and holidays. Within the boxes you will find a long roll of dental floss that can be torn off into small lengths using a serrated section on the lip of the box. Tear off an amount that will be easily manoeuvrable with both of your hands and pull it in between two teeth. Move it backwards and forwards and then repeat the process in the next gap.

This is necessary to do regularly because brushing alone cannot always remove plaque from what can be tight gaps between teeth. If plaque stays in these gaps then it will begin to erode the protective enamel from the surface of teeth and also cause gum disease. Too much contact between gums and acidic plaque causes gums to become inflamed. If this inflammation spreads to the jaw bone then tooth loss becomes a serious concern.

Central London dentists report that many people are put off flossing because the first time they do it they experience bleeding from the gums. This is quite normal and should cease after a few more time as your gums become hardier.

Plaque is not just a bothersome substance when it comes to teeth. It also has a profound effect on gums when it is exposed to them. As such, taking the right care of your mouth is doubly important because it means not just saving your teeth from erosion but also stopping gum disease. Often misunderstood, gum disease can cause teeth to be lost and is something that it is worth doing your best to side step if possible.

The good news is that gum disease is pretty easy to avoid if you follow the simple processes of maintaining good oral hygiene. The thing to remember is that plaque left on the gum line of teeth will cause the gums to become inflamed. Bear this in mind when brushing so that you are removing plaque from those particular areas of teeth as well. But make sure that you are not over compensating and brushing too hard because this can damage the gums.

Flossing is vital too because plaque, not to mention food debris can easily hide in the gaps between teeth. Once there it can do immense damage, not only to teeth but to the gums also. Regular brushing is unlikely to be able to remove the plaque and debris from the tight gaps between teeth and, without flossing, the plaque there can start to cause the inflammation that heralds gum disease. By pulling medicated dental floss between your teeth you will be doing the best job to remove plaque from those sensitive areas.

Your City of London dentist will tell you that healthy gums are a shade of pink. Any reddening or swelling should be reported to your dentist immediately.

A fact that may surprise many people is that gum disease actually accounts for more cases of tooth loss than the decay of teeth themselves. The real tragedy that is the backdrop to that fact is that gum disease is easily avoidable by following a simple set of advice and staying in a situation of good communication with your dentist.

In understanding the causes of gum disease, one can go a long way towards stopping it from happening. Just like the decay of your teeth, gums are damaged by being over exposed to plaque. It causes the gums to become inflamed and reddened and to feel rather sore as a result. This stage is known as gingivitis but if things get progressively worse, this can develop into periodontitis where the gums begin to recede as the inflammation spreads to the jaw bone too.

Brushing your teeth well and using a brush with firm bristles should remove most of the plaque from your mouth but it is vital that you floss as well. This is because plaque does not only live on the surfaces of teeth, it will also prevail in the small, tight gaps between teeth. Flossing is the only way to remove it from these gaps and by doing so you will significantly reduce the chances of developing gum disease.

At your regular dental check ups with your Central London dentist, the signs of early gum disease can easily be spotted thanks to the thorough examination that you will be subject to. Usually your dentist will simply remind you to floss but if the problem is a lot worse then more drastic action might be needed.

It is teeth that tend to grab most of the headlines when it comes to dentistry. But this is changing as the public realise that they need to take just as much care over their gums as their teeth. This recognition is timely as gum disease is a real problem amongst adults in the United Kingdom and accounts for more cases of teeth being lost than actual tooth decay.

This is hardly surprising when you think about it. Gums are essentially what hold teeth in place, with help from the jaw bone too of course. Yet they can become diseased in much the same way that teeth can become unhealthy. The prime culprit in both cases is the plaque that is formed when you eat and drink. If it is not adequately cleared from the gums then they will lose their health and there will be an impact on your mouth.

Initially gum disease can be diagnosed because of slight reddening and feelings of sensitivity when substances that are hot or cold are consumed. In advances stages then the gums will be far from the pink colour that indicates excellent health, instead they will turn a fierce hue of red and begin to recede, giving the effect that teeth are lengthening.

The best way to combat gum disease is not only to brush as normal but also to make sure that are flossing too. Flossing is a vital activity that removes the plaque from the places where tooth brushes are simply unable to reach: between your teeth. In the early stages of gum disease (called gingivitis) this is probably all that your City of London dentist will advise and the condition is quite reversible. But once things have progressed and periodontitis takes hold, tooth loss becomes a great possibility and more drastic action might be needed.

Every good parent wants their child to have the best possible start in life so that their offspring can be happy and healthy. Taking care of teeth is of paramount importance because any damage sustained to teeth will affect the child for the rest of their life. We only get one set of healthy teeth so it is worth taking care of them, but for young children the responsibility rests with their parents or guardians.

Plaque is as much of a concern for children as it is the rest of us. Everything ought to be done to ensure that plaque doesn’t take hold, causing dental decay and or gum disease. But trying to get children to brush their teeth can be nothing short of a nightmare. You can’t brush their teeth for them forever so it is essential that you encourage them to do it themselves. Brightly coloured tooth brushes featuring cartoon characters can be helpful, as can give them incentives.

Restricting the amount of sugary snacks that they eat is also advisable, especially if you are having difficulty getting your son or daughter to brush their teeth. Dental sealants can be a useful tool because it provides youthful teeth with an extra layer of protection against the plaque which can attack enamel.

Get your child comfortable with being in the dental surgery so that it becomes a lifelong habit for them. Dental phobia can form in children if you pass on negative attitudes about the dentist to them. It is not a good idea to get your child into a position where they don’t want to see the dentist and, as such put themselves at risk from oral ailments. With their teeth developing, it is imperative that your City of London dentist keeps an eye on how they are coming through.

At any time the blood is poisoned, it is circulated straight away to the whole body by your heart. Death by serious poisoning is instantaneous because all of the organs are hit viciously at the same time and shut down through the trauma. However, a gentle, mild poisoning, builds up in the organs over time and when the body can take it no more, the organs start to fail. Dentists in the city of London have identified the risk to the heart and constant infections of the blood, by diseases that emanate from the mouth. Gum disease is the major criminal here. They will bang on and on about it, but they have a point- poor oral hygiene will get you in the end. If you’re lazy, miss appointments and fail to do the basic oral hygiene procedures, you are putting your life at risk, maybe not now, but further on down the line. Once plaque gets in, it collects around the teeth and attacks the enamel of the teeth; the bacteria that grows from this, then starts to poison the gums. In the ‘good old days’, the dentist would just pull your teeth and fit you with dentures- but that couldn’t reverse the fact your blood had already been damaged and your body infected. Come on people! How hard is it to visit your dentist regularly and to brush, floss and rinse at least twice a day? It’s your life and you choose the outcome.
