Central London dentists carry out emergency tooth extractions safely and effectively

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

If you are suffering from severe and prolonged dental pain then it is possible that you might need to have a tooth extracted by your dentist. This might be the result of an accident which affected your mouth and so damaged a tooth that is has lost functionality and your nerves are beginning to be interfered with. It is not a decision that your dentist will take lightly as they always strive to try and keep all of your teeth in your mouth. But in some cases the tooth is causing more harm than good by being in your mouth and your dentist will want to ensure that no further complications can arise as a result of the damaged tooth.

It is understandably something that many patients feel rather apprehensive about prior to the procedure taking place. Tooth extraction will always be carried out under some form of anaesthetic which prevents the patient from feeling pain. Generally this will be local anaesthetic, administered as an injection. If general anaesthetic is required so that the patient is essentially unconscious during the procedure then it will have to take place in a hospital rather than the dental surgery.

Your Central London dentist will have carried out this procedure many times before and will be expert in how best to do it. Essentially the troublesome tooth is grasped securely by a pair of forceps and gradually moved from side to side until it has come free. Sometimes the dentist will have to use another device to widen the hole in which the tooth is housed so that better purchase can be achieved with the forceps. It is not something most people will have to go through in their lives but you can rest assured that your dentist will always have your safety and comfort in the forefront of their mind.

London Dentist Talks About Teeth Whitening History

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

There has been a long term interest in tooth whitening procedures and products in London. Historically, the ancient Romans used Portuguese urine in an attempt to whiten their teeth, and in the 14th century, teeth whitening procedures were the second most requested dental treatment; only behind tooth extractions. Back then, tooth whitening was performed using metal files and nitric acid. Then, the mid 19th century brought whitening agents such as chloride of lime, and with time other whitening agents (e.g., oxalic acid, ether peroxide and hydrogen peroxide) were being utilized. In the late 19th century a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, ether and electricity was used, however the electricity was soon replaced with heat. In the beginning of the 20th century, hydrogen peroxide (35%) stimulated by light or heated up was the established standard for whitening teeth. Hydrochloric acid was introduced as a method of teeth whitening in 1916, and in 1966 it was used in combination with hydrogen peroxide. By 1970 it was well established that hydrogen peroxide was the most effective stain removal agent. In 1989, teeth whitening by means of 10% carbamide peroxide in trays made for each individual patient using stone models of their mouths were employed.
Recently, countless teeth whitening systems have swamped the market claiming to safely whiten teeth. They have promised long-lasting outcomes with no aggravation, and vary from store bought home-bleaching kits all the way through to dental office photochemical laser whitening techniques. So, which whitening system and/or procedure will best suit your needs, and are most dependable? Advertisers also work their magic to confuse you even further! Therefore, selecting the best teeth whitening product can be very confusing.
