Emergency dental problems are problems that must be dealt with immediately.
Common emergency problems
Dental emergencies are much more common than many people may think, with most emergencies occurring as a result of accidents and injuries while in some cases it may develop as a result of an existing condition getting worse. Common emergency problems include:
- Chipped teeth
- Dental abscesses
- Broken teeth
- Lost teeth
- Broken dentures
- Broken braces
- Broken dental bridges, crowns and veneers
- Gum conditions and infections
- Severe toothache
- Wisdom teeth problems
If you lose a tooth, try to find it and keep it in a glass of milk or cool water. If you get treatment quickly enough it may be possible to salvage the tooth. If you are suffering with a problem such as toothache and it is getting worse and not fading with painkillers, contact our dental practice immediately as this could signify a more serious condition. Don't suffer in silence and hope it goes away.
What happens at an emergency appointment?
One of our experienced dentists will first examine your mouth and determine the nature and severity of your situation. Once the dentist has assessed you they will begin to treat the problem. You may have to have dental X-rays and after the initial treatment you may be required to return for further treatment; this will usually be carried out in normal surgery hours. If you have dental insurance, you will be asked to fill out the necessary paperwork to claim for the cost of your treatment.
Nervous patients
We understand that many people feel anxious about going to the dentist and we are well-equipped to deal with nervous patients. We want to make your appointment as comfortable and stress-free as possible. An emergency situation can be stressful for anyone, but for a nervous patient this can be particularly difficult. We will do our best to make you feel calm and relaxed and will treat you as quickly and effectively as possible.
Children
Children are often involved in accidents, trips and falls and sometimes require emergency treatment for their teeth. Our dentists are expert trained to deal with children and will do everything possible to make your child feel comfortable and calm. We understand that this may be a very scary situation for young children and we will make every effort to reassure your child and make their trip as stress-free as possible. Our clinic is kitted out with a range of distractions to divert children’s attention from the procedure and keep them entertained.
