The money was raised by cosmetic dentists throughout the UK volunteering their time to provide teeth whitening treatments for patients, who then made a donation to the charity in exchange for the procedure. The BACD charitable organisation “Smiling for the World” then decided to pass on £5,000 of the money raised so far this year to Facing the World for the vital work they do in Third World countries, to provide free treatment for children who would otherwise have no hope of a life free from disfigurement.
The free teeth whitening appointments are available thanks to a alliance between the BACD and six of the major dental products manufacturers in the UK; Dentsply, Discus Dental, DMDS, Enlighten Smiles, Optident, Pola and Wy10. All these organisations work together to raise funds for “Smiling for the World” which then distributes the cash to worthy projects, such as Facing the World.
BACD president, Dr James Goolnik, says: “As dentists we have the ability to affect the way people feel about themselves – and this project allows us to do it on a much grander scale.”
So far, the scheme has managed to raise an impressive £17,000 for the Facing the World charity alone since it was set up in 2007. Cosmetic dentists who are interested in becoming part of the scheme are always welcome and should contact the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentists for more information. Similarly, patients who are interested in getting teeth whitening treatment and donating the cost to charity can find out from the BACD which surgeries in their area are taking part in the project.
