Lingual Braces

The Lingual Brace is a modern orthodontic alternative to traditional metal braces. Designed to be discreet and unseen by others, it is composed of brackets and arch wires that are bonded behind the teeth to correct mild to severe tooth irregularities. Young persons and adults who have crooked, protruding, abnormally spaced or overcrowded teeth, as well as bite problems, can choose the Lingual Brace to remedy their orthodontic problem.

Improvement on Traditional Braces

The designers of the brace have improved on traditional metal braces by creating an elegant system which is able to straighten misaligned teeth and correct improper bite while preserving facial and smile aesthetics. The self-ligating design of the brace provides improved oral movement and benefits mouth functionality.

Lingual Braces are custom-made to match the individual's orthodontic condition and oral dimensions. The dentist will evaluate the person's teeth straightening requirements, taking into account oral impressions and imaging, before ensuring the unique design of the brace based on specific measurements.

During the next visit the Lingual Brace will be bonded to the rear of the teeth and the archwire adjusted for comfort. Certain individuals may require other dental treatment before this process can begin, but this will be discussed beforehand. The time to fit the orthodontic appliance can take longer than traditional metal braces due to the manner in which the brackets are attached to the rear of the teeth.

Effective Design

Patients benefit from effective teeth straightening and continued smile aesthetics, this particular system being amongst the most discreet braces available today. Traditional braces are known to cause stigma, oral irritation and, in some cases, poor oral health, but Lingual Braces solve these issues and are comfortable to wear.

The dentist will explain exactly how to practice oral hygiene and maintain the brace. Although the brace is not removable but for the assistance of a dentist, they are nonetheless designed for easy wear and cleaning.

The major difference between these braces and traditional appliances is that Lingual Braces are bonded to the rear of the teeth, concealing the fact that dental treatment is being received by the patient. This will come as welcome news to those who may are not enamoured by the idea of wearing unsightly braces.

The cosmetic appeal of Lingual Braces means an individual attending special occasions and functions will have no need to feel self-conscious or awkward. Many people have chosen this advanced type of brace for this very reason, including media personas and celebrities.

The special technology and techniques used to produce the bespoke brace means that they are slightly more costly than conventional systems. As with any brace system there is an adjustment period after the device is fitted, but any sensations of discomfort will quickly subside and you can continue your journey to straighter teeth.

Adjusting to Lingual Braces

Wearing the brace may have some initial impact upon speech or word pronunciation. This occurs because the tongue is getting used to the position of the brackets and archwire. The slight speech alteration and time of adjustment can range from one to two weeks.

Certain orthodontic conditions, particularly if mild, may be suited to other modern brace systems such as Invisalign, Clearstep or Simpli5. When the dentist evaluates a person's oral condition, they will advise on what type of system is best suited to the individual's needs.

The orthodontic diagnosis and the person's age and preferences are the key criteria in the type of brace system recommended. Teens may be better suited to other braces as their teeth and oral structures are still developing.

Treatment time is not dissimilar to traditional brace systems, but this will be based on the severity of the diagnosis. Teeth straightening results can range from one to three years and differ from person to person.

The cost of Lingual Braces will differ based on the type of Lingual Brace system being used, the severity of the case and the duration of treatment. During the consultation the dentist will explain the benefits, risks and cost of treatment to ensure patients understand the treatment process.

Besides the standard braces there are two other models of Lingual Brace, including:

  • STb Light Lingual Braces
  • STb Social 6 Braces

STb Light Lingual Braces

The brace is discreet and will be placed behind the teeth using connecting archwires teeth. It is specifically designed for individuals with speech impediments or difficulties eating, with teeth straightening results varying based on dental repositioning needs. The brace offers the same discreet, comfortable and aesthetically-pleasing standard of the conventional Lingual Brace system but has a lighter design.

The STb Light Lingual Brace is a low friction, self-ligating system that is bonded behind the teeth and provides ease of oral movement. People with speech and eating challenges can benefit from this advanced design. The patient’s oral health will be assessed to determine if the brace is suitable for their treatment.

It takes a week or two to adjust to wearing STb Light Lingual Braces, but initial sensations of discomfort will soon subside. The benefits of the brace are that it offers utmost discretion and provides a faster treatment time than standard Lingual Braces, with results becoming apparent within sixteen weeks or less.

The light design promotes better speech pronunciation and chewing ability. The brace is also convenient to clean and oral hygiene is maintained with ease.

STb Social 6 Braces

The STb Social 6 Brace is a light design aimed at treating mild orthodontic conditions. Placed behind the teeth the brace allows patients to continue their activities without anyone knowing orthodontic treatment is being received. Treatment time may differ based on the particular case, but on average it takes around sixteen weeks.

The discreet, aesthetically-pleasing design of STb Social 6 Braces means special events can be attended with no negative effect on one’s confidence, the braces being concealed behind the teeth to ensure smile aesthetics is maintained.

The braces are similar to the other models of Lingual Brace in their custom-design, fitting and adjustment. Within two weeks people tend to adjust to the brace and oral health is promoted through an elegant design.

STB Social 6 Braces may not be suitable for all patients, particularly those with more severe orthodontic conditions.
