What Exactly is Gum Contouring?

We employ a procedure known as cosmetic gum contouring to treat a gummy smile. Using the latest laser technology, we are able to contour and shape the gums to create a more attractive smile and increase confidence.

Banishing those gummy smiles

The term ‘gummy smile’ refers to the look of the smile when there is a lot of visible gum tissue around your teeth. In many cases, the large proportion of gum tissue makes the teeth look short and the smile ends up looking imbalanced. A gummy smile is nothing to worry about in terms of your health, but it can affect the way you feel about how you look and the image you portray around others. If you’re unhappy with your smile, you may be less likely to show it off and this can affect the way you come across and indicate low confidence. It can also affect the way you feel about your appearance, which can contribute to a lack of self-esteem.
Gum contouring is designed to improve the aesthetic balance of the smile by reducing the amount of gum tissue that is visible and exposing more of the tooth crown. The teeth appear longer and larger and you will be able to notice an instant difference.

How is gum contouring performed?

We use the latest laser techniques to carry out contouring treatment. Typically, treatment is completed within 30 minutes and your dentist will use their skill combined with technology to remove some of the gum tissue and reshape the gum line to produce a beautiful new smile.
In some complex cases when bone tissue and a large amount of gum tissue have to be removed, surgical treatment may be required. This involves a procedure that lasts 1-2 hours, and recovery time of around four to six weeks.
