Metal Dentures

Missing teeth arise from oral trauma, dental damage, gum infection and the need for tooth extraction. Metal dentures are a tooth substitute option for one or more missing teeth, providing continued oral function and preservation of facial form.

Metal dentures are stabilised in the mouth with denture adhesive gel to prevent shifting and oral irritation. Made for strength and durability, wearers soon adjust to proper fitting metal dentures that support existing teeth.

Not all metal is cold and unsightly. Metal dentures are made of medically-approved cobalt chrome, or a hybrid of cobalt chrome and nylon resin. The metal can be tooth coloured for enhanced appearance.

People with allergies may benefit from metal dentures that are hypo-allergenic – reducing the chance of allergic reaction. People with an allergy to any metals should discuss this with the dentist prior to treatment.

Advanced dentistry techniques enable custom-design of metal braces, so that they are made to fit the patient’s mouth. This will lower the risk of irritation in the mouth. Patients benefit from snug-fitting dentures designed just for their needs.

Patients can benefit from discreet and comfortable metal dentures. These include options to have tooth coloured metal clips or clasps, for better denture stability and retention. Having metal dentures that resemble natural looking teeth give patients added confidence.

Metal dentures are an alternative to acrylic plastic dentures that fit the mouth and palate. Smaller and not palate-covering, metal dentures allow individuals to enjoy the flavours of their foods and communicate as normal, without denture bulk impeding these functions.

Metal dentures are strong and less likely to fracture, since they are not as fragile as their counterparts. Although the mouth changes shape, metal dentures have enough give without going out of shape. Dentists monitor the wear of metal dentures as part of regular dental check-ups.

Patients are given several options to replace missing teeth, such as dentures made from blended materials. Hybrid dentures can be made from a combination of metal and plastic, or metal and nylon resin. The dental clinician will ensure proper denture fit for comfort during wear. Presence of metal material in the fabrication of dentures gives them strength and resilience. Metal dentures give patients comfortable teeth replacement with lasting results.

The cost of metal dentures depends on the materials they are made with or combined with. Options such as acrylic plastic dentures can be economical, but not as long-lasting. We discuss affordability with patients and give costs up front, so that patients know what to expect. Investing in metal dentures may be a more cost-effective choice in the long run.

The dental clinician sets an initial appointment to consider the patient’s oral health and appropriateness for treatment. All options are discussed with the patient and recommendations are made to meet treatment needs. Patients are fully involved in their care plans with transparency about risks, benefits and costs.

Should metal dentures be chosen for treatment, an impression will be taken of the patient’s mouth. These oral measurements will be given to the laboratory technician, who will custom-make the metal dentures according to the unique teeth and gum tissue dimensions.

Small metal dentures that replace up to three teeth may be produced sooner. Larger or longspan metal dentures require bite or occlusion measurements and a trial fitting, so approximately two more appointments can be necessary.

The size of the metal denture and the amount of teeth being replaced determine the length of time taken to manufacture metal dentures. The dentist provides the laboratory technician with patient-specific dimensions, in order to custom-make the metal dentures in a laboratory.

Once complete, the patient returns to the practice for an adjustment and final fitting. Once the metal denture is fitted, patients wear the denture for a couple of days and provide feedback about their experience. The dentist will review the performance of the metal dentures adjustments are made where needed.

Alternatives to metal dentures include acrylic, flexible and hybrid dentures. The clinician will evaluate a person’s oral health to determine what teeth replacement is most suitable.

Acrylic dentures are gum tissue borne, supported by the gums to replace missing teeth on either the upper or lower arch. Made to resemble normal teeth and gums, acrylic dentures are a more affordable option to metal dentures.

Flexible dentures are a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing alternative to metal dentures, suited to individuals with insufficient jaw bone support for dental implants and those with irregular-shaped mouths. These dentures flex into shape and provide a comfortable fit for a beautiful smile.

Hybrid dentures combine the best of metal and flexible dentures, providing a comfortable, strong and stable fit, due to the blend of metal and nylon resin materials. Patients benefit from having teeth that last and look natural.
