Dental Health Linked to General Health

A new organisation in the US studying the link between dental health and general health has just held its first meeting in Wisconsin.

The American Academy for Oral System Health (AAOSH) aims to bring together medical professionals from a number of fields, to encourage co-operation between them in order to provide medical care for patients. Dr Reid Winick, one of the dentists attending the first conference, is confident that the organisation will be useful as there is always new evidence emerging of the link between oral health and the general health of the patient. “The formation of this organisation could not have come at a better time,” he said.

There were a number of presentations at the conference, including one from a physician whose patient was unable to conceive until a gum infection was cleared up and another who spoke about the link between oral health and diabetes. Fifty professionals attended this first meeting, but the AAOSH are hopeful that more doctors, from other fields, will be encouraged to attend future events.

“We’re excited about finally working closely with cardiologists, diabetic specialists, obstetricians and many more medical specialities,” explains Dr. Reid Winick. “AAOSH is all about opening those doors of communication and offering to help, so that we can contribute to the improved health for the patients we share.”

Other presentations at the conference were given by dental surgeons on new treatments for dental decay and periodontal disease as well as a number of discussion groups about the importance of nutrition in oral health.

The aim of the AAOSH is to assist medical professional to help their patients by coordinating research and treatment to make sure no stone is left unturned in trying to diagnose a particular problem and find the correct treatment.

“When dentists and physicians work together, medical outcomes will be improved and lives will be lengthened,” states AAOSH President Dr. Chris Kammer. “Many people still don’t understand that good dental health can add years to your life, so one of our missions is to educate the public as well.”
