Success in meeting dentistry targets in Scotland

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Figures released by the Scottish Parliament have revealed that a high proportion of people are now on the books of NHS dentists north of the border.

As part of their campaign promises at the last election, the Scottish National Party had announced a series of targets that would try and increase access to NHS dentists for adults and children and improve dental health throughout the country.

The latest statistics from ISD Scotland showed that the number of people registered with NHS dentists has increased by over one million since March, 2007.

The government has surpassed their target of having 80% of children aged between the ages of three and five registered with a dentist, while 69% of adults in the country are now regularly getting treatment from an NHS dental clinic.

Public Health Minister Shona Robison said: “Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our NHS staff progress is being made across the board. These statistics released today provide only a snapshot of the improvements that are being delivered across the health service in Scotland.”

She added; “The Scottish Government has made significant investments in dentistry and we now have more NHS dentists than ever before. Today’s figures show an extra million Scots, including the vast majority of children living north of the border, now have access to NHS dental treatment.”
