Friday, December 24th, 2010

In a society so obsessed with personal image and appearance, it can be extremely debilitating to feel ashamed of your smile. Meeting new people and attending business meetings can become difficult propositions if you think that your smile is not what it could be. Stained, uneven or damaged teeth can now be easily rectified by porcelain veneers.

Advances in dentistry mean that in just one session with your dentist you can have stunning and durable porcelain veneers fitted. The confidence boost that this can give you is incredible and you will soon forget that you ever had problems with your teeth at all such is the coverage of natural looking porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers can be as thin as contact lenses, meaning that the minimum of work is required to even have them fitted. CEREC techniques used by Central London dentists allow your new porcelain veneers to be constructed in six minutes flat from an online milling machine which uses the data from 3D digital x-rays. No longer will you have to wait weeks for your new veneers to be made and have to wear temporary ones in the meantime.

Once constructed, your dentist will clean the area and apply a special etching agent which will help the veneer to bind effectively with your tooth. The veneer, specially matched to the rest of your teeth in terms of colour, shade and even translucence, can be attached to the existing tooth.

If you need a damaged, stained or crooked tooth covered by a veneer, ask your Central London dentist about the amazing results that the porcelain variety can now offer.

City of London dentists give stunning results with porcelain crowns

Nobody should have to feel embarrassed about their smile. Such feelings can lead to awkwardness in social situations as you worry if somebody will dislike the appearance of your teeth. If you suffer from teeth which are damaged in some way it is vitally important that you deal with the problem swiftly and effectively so you can get on with living your life confidently.

Crowns can strengthen a broken tooth, allowing it to function just like a natural, healthy tooth. You might find that one of your teeth has broken down to the point where it is impossible for it to be rebuilt. In these situations, crowns are ideal as they cover the broken down tooth, protecting it from further cavity formation.

Crowns are also a good option if you wish to have stained or cracked teeth covered up. Tooth whitening might be more appropriate as it is less invasive but a crown can give permanent cover to stained teeth and allow you to smile again with confidence.

Metal is no longer the preferred material for crowns as it could lead to the formation of dark lines against the gum. The resulting aesthetic effect offered little improvement on having a damaged tooth in the first place. The porcelain crowns which are used now match the surrounding teeth, giving a look that is natural and discreet.

Depending on the state of the tooth in question, your dentist might have to remove a little of it under local anaesthetic. An impression is then taken using dental putty and sent to a lab where the crown is made. Usually you will only need to wait for two week while wearing a temporary crown and then your durable porcelain crown will be ready to be installed. Contact your City of London dentist today if you think that porcelain crowns might be the answer to your problems

The wonders of cosmetic dentistry from City of London dentist

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

In the past, the role of the dentist was solely one of treating and repairing damaged or decayed teeth and gums but in recent years they have also become to be seen as cosmetic practitioners, offering a multitude of different treatments to improve the appearance of the teeth.

One of the most common and affordable cosmetic dentistry procedures is teeth whitening, this involves bleaching the teeth with a substance called hydrogen peroxide. This removes stained areas and lightens the shade of the tooth enamel by as much as ten shades. Teeth whitening treatments start from as little as sixty pounds but do become more expensive the more comprehensive the treatment you choose. Whiter teeth can have a dramatic affect on the smile and make you look years younger.

There are many more cosmetic procedures that can be used. For teeth that are badly worn, uneven or discoloured there is the option of having a whole set of porcelain veneers fitted. This is one of the most dramatic improvements that can be made to the teeth and even the most unattractive teeth can be completely transformed. Porcelain veneers will also offer a greater degree of protection to the natural teeth that remain underneath and will last upwards of twenty years if properly maintained.

More comprehensive cosmetic dentistry work carried out simultaneously is often called a smile makeover. This is when the City of London dentist attempts to completely remodel the smile using a variety of different cosmetic dentistry techniques. You may be familiar with the smile makeover as they are commonly used on TV transformation shows where the contestants undergo a radical overhaul of their appearance.

Experience the future with Cerec from City of London dentist

When teeth are damaged, either by decay, discolouration or dental trauma, there is often a need to repair them using dental restorations. These come in three main forms:

Dental crowns – These are caps that are placed over the whole part of the tooth above the gum line to protect it form further decay or damage.

Dental veneers – Like crowns, they are placed over the top of the teeth but usually to cover worn enamel or discolouration. Veneers are more often used for cosmetic affect, to restore the appearance of the teeth.

Inlays – These are used when a dental cavity is too big to fill with composite bonding alone.

All three are cemented in place using dental bonding which is then set firm with the heat of a dental laser.

Dental restorations used to be manufactured from ceramic or a mixture of ceramic and metal, and involved a painstaking process in the laboratory. In the last few years, a new technology called Cerec has emerged that has drastically cut down the manufacturing time.

Using the latest digital x-ray technology, the City of London dentist is able to create an image of the patient’s teeth and then produce the restoration on the computer. This information is then sent to a computer–guided mill, which sculpts the ceramic, usually porcelain, form a single piece in a matter of minutes.

This new technology, often referred to as chair-side restoration is changing the face of modern dentistry and offering patients vastly more accurate and speedy treatment. It is now possible to have a crown or veneer designed, manufactured and fitted in one single appointment, an improvement on the average time of two weeks it previously took.

If you have a crown or filling that needs replacing, ask your dentist about the latest Cerec technology and experience for yourself, the future of dentistry.

Extensive list of dental procedures available from London dentist

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

In modern dentistry there is now a procedure for almost every eventuality, be it cosmetic or purely practical. Technological advances over the last twenty years have greatly increased the possibilities of dental treatment and significantly improved the results achievable in traditional treatments.

One of the most common dental problems is discolouration either due to age or from an outside source such as tobacco or an excess of fluoride. Teeth that have lost their colour or been stained can now be treated using a variety of different whitening systems, designed to meet specific needs. Alternatively, it is possible to cover discoloured teeth with a set of porcelain veneers which are cemented over the original teeth.

Veneers can also be used to repair teeth that have been damaged by chips or cracks. The veneer acts as a protective barrier and structural support to the tooth and restores the cosmetic procedure. For more seriously damaged teeth London dentists may choose to use a crown, which is a more solid and extensive variety of a veneer. Both crowns, veneers and dental inlays can now be made using the very latest computer technology which has radically improved both the quality and length of treatment. In fact, it is now possible to design and fit a whole set of veneers in a single appointment.

There is a list of possible dental treatments too long to name here but rest assured that whatever your particular dental concern there is a dental procedure available that can restore or improve the appearance of your teeth. And as treatments become more available they also become more affordable. Make an appointment with your dentist to see what they could do for your teeth.

London Dentists Offer Porcelain Veneers

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

Porcelain veneers are used a lot to improve smiles in London. If your teeth are discoloured, damaged and/or worn, porcelain veneers may be a perfect solution. Also known as laminates or dental veneers, porcelain veneers are made explicitly for each patient and tooth. They are excellent for cosmetic tooth/teeth improvements in the right situations. Minimal tooth preparation is required for porcelain veneers, and two dental visits are required to complete the porcelain veneer treatments. The first visit entails a smile analysis, complete intraoral exam, X-rays, stone models made form impressions, and digital photographs. A computer image is used to show the patient how their teeth look before the procedure, and this image is altered to show the patient the results that will be obtained. Any changes to the smile should be talked about with your London dentist.
Once the dentist gets the go ahead, the teeth are anaesthetized and prepared for impressions. Gingival cord is then packed around the prepared teeth and an impression of the prepared teeth, and the opposing teeth, are taken by the dentist. A bite registration is also taken, and then a shade is selected. These impressions and bite registration are sent to the lab along with the chosen shade, and porcelain veneers are made. The laboratory usually takes two weeks to complete the porcelain veneers. Temporary shells are then made by the dentist and cemented onto the preparations so the teeth won’t be sensitive or shift. You will then be given an appointment in about 2 weeks. The veneers are then cemented into place. Porcelain veneers are inherently weak; but, the bonding to the well-built tooth substructure makes them strong.

Dental Bonding at London Dental Clinic

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

In London, dental bonding is being used on facial tooth surfaces of front teeth to restore carious of damaged teeth, to make teeth look better, and to eliminate spaces between teeth. It can also be used to cover tooth roots that have become exposed due to gum recession. In the majority of cases that use bonding, minimal tooth structure is removed, and sometimes only roughened up, and the teeth don’t have to be numbed. Unless, of course, decay is being removed and the tooth is being bonded afterwards.

Your London dentist will select the appropriate shade and will proceed to bond your tooth/teeth. If your dentist is lightening your teeth with bonding, a lighter shade will be selected to increase the aesthetics of your teeth. You tooth/teeth surface(s) that is to be bonded will be roughened with a diamond bur and the tooth surface will be etched with etching solution or gel. The tooth will then be rinsed and dried, and a liquid unfilled resin will be placed on the tooth with an applicator, and your tooth will be light cured. Your dentist will then placed the filled resin (i.e., bonding material) onto the tooth and shape it with plastic instruments. This material will again be light cured, and a final touch-up and polishing will take place. This procedure can be completed in a relatively short period of time in London, and is not invasive or too expensive. Your dentist and their staff will make sure that you are well versed in the proper care of this bonding material, and will explain all of the do’s and don’ts.
